On the occasion of Children's Day, a teachers group in the city has demanded that the state make it mandatory for schools to work only for five days a week.
Shikshak Parishad, a teachers' group has written to the education minister and the department with the request. According to the Right to Education Act, minimum working days for class I to V is 200, while for classes VI to VIII it is 220. For class IX and X, the minimum working days according to the Secondary School Code are 230.Deducting 76 of vacation and 52 Sundays from the 365 days, schools are left with only 237 days and hence several of them work six days to meet the requirement.
“There is immense pressure on the students, parents and the society. These pressures are taking them away from outdoor sports or hobbies,” said Anil Bornare of Shikshak Parishad.
