JJ Marg police on Tuesday arrested Karan Purohit, an MBBS student from Grant Medical College at JJ Hospital, for allegedly submitting a fake caste certificate for admission to the course. Purohit is the first medical student to be held in the case. Earlier, the police had arrested Santosh Waghmare, a Nashik-based painter, and Rasheed Qadri, an agent.

A police officer confirmed the arrest and said the 23-yearold Purohit was produced before the court. “He has been remanded to police custody till November 18. Investigation is on,” said the officer.

On August 11, JJ Marg police registered a case of cheating and forgery against nine students for allegedly securing admission to the MBBS course with fake caste certificates. They included Karan Purohit, Israr Qadri, Avais Khan, Akhef Reshamwala, Areeba Khan, Noman Mansuri, Ayesha Reshmanwala, Maria Shaikh and Taiba Shaikh.While all other students got anticipatory bail, Purohit's pre-arrest bail application was rejected. “Other students were minors at the time the offence was committed. We recorded statements of some of them,” said an officer.

Advocate Tauseef Ansari, who appeared for intervener Ibrahim Shaikh in the case, said, “We have been saying right from the beginning that there is a huge financial transaction involved in making fake caste certificates. Today, the police have mentioned the financial angle clearly in the remand paper.”

JJ Marg police, in its remand paper, said Purohit had told them that he had paid Rasheed Qadri, another arrested accused, Rs 15 lakh. Qadri, a Bandra resident, was arrested in this ca se on November 11. He was sent to judical custody on Tuesday. The police are yet to recover Rs 15 lakh from him.

Waghmare, a resident of Pat hardi Phata in Nashik, was arrested on September 29 for allegedly preparing fake caste certificates, and forging signatures and stamps of government officials. During interrogation, he reportedly said he had made fake caste certificates for the nine students on the instructions of Dr Wahab Mirza, who runs a clinic in central Mumbai. While Waghmare was sent to Arthur Road jail, Mirza has moved the session’s court for a pre-arrest bail order.
